Relief Efforts Relaunched from Coast to Coast in Response to Latest Philippine Typhoons
In response to the devastating floods wrought by Typhoon Gener (Saola) and Typhoon Haikui from the end of July through the beginning of August, and with the threat of Tropical Storm Helen (Kai-Tak) currently escalating, the Los Angeles-based non-profit, People’s Community Organization for Reform and Empowerment (People’s CORE), has relaunched the Sagip-Tulong sa Pilipinas (STP) Emergency Relief Campaign to deliver urgently needed supplies and financial assistance for flood survivors most impacted in the Philippines.
More than 100 lives have been lost as a result of the storms. Over 400,000 people have been displaced with no choice but to find shelter in crowded evacuation centers. Overall, 4 million have been affected by the flood waters that have submerged roughly 80% of Manila.
Through the STP Emergency Relief Campaign, People’s CORE, whose mission is to train, organize, and mobilize community members in effecting systemic change, has partnered with the Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC), a non-governmental organization registered in the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-profit, non-stock social development agency. CDRC is licensed and accredited by the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development to implement relief, rehabilitation, preparedness, and mitigation programs.
People’s CORE will be collecting monetary and in-kind donations to be distributed by CDRC among communities hardest hit by these recent natural disasters. Amounts of $50 or greater are tax-deductible. Please make checks payable to “People’s CORE” with “STP Relief Fund” included in the memo. Monetary donations may be dropped off or mailed to the People’s CORE Main Office during operating hours from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
