Community HealthPeople’s CORE believes that healthy individuals contribute to a healthy community. People’s CORE conducts health education and public health advocacy to raise awareness about health issues that impact community members’ lives, the health conditions where they live and work, and ways of improving their health and wellbeing. People’s CORE works in collaboration with community health organizations and government agencies in order to diversify, reinforce, and complement available strategies and services to meet the needs of the community. |
| Lead Education Action Project (LEAP) | |
Some low-income areas in Central Los Angeles have been identified as “Lead Hot Zones” where children have become more at-risk for lead poisoning. People’s CORE aims to reduce their risk by ensuring that the apartment buildings they live in are in compliance with lead-safe policies and building safety codes. LEAP conducts health outreach on the health risks of lead poisoning, identifies lead hazards in housing units and refers at-risk children to local clinics for blood lead screenings. Through capacity building activities, the project trains residents to be health promoters in order to spread awareness to the community on lead-safe practices and advocate for health code compliance in housing units. |
| Fish Contamination Education Collaborative | |
People’s CORE is a member of the Fish Contamination Education Collaborative (FCEC), a participatory outreach and education project of the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The collaborative addresses the health risks of fish contamination as a result of the illegal dumping of pesticides around the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles. The chemicals spread over a large area, extending into Santa Monica Bay and the Los Angeles-Long Beach Harbors. People’s CORE conducts health education about the unequal exposures to chemicals faced by community members who catch and eat fish from Los Angeles County coasts. |
| Tobacco Control Advocacy | |
People’s CORE engages in health outreach and policy advocacy in order to address the alarming rate of tobacco use among Asian Pacific Islanders. The tobacco industry considers Asians a key market because smoking prevalence in most Asian countries is considerably higher than in the US. Almost half of Asian Pacific Islanders who are regular smokers initiate smoking as young adults. People’s CORE provides culturally appropriate tobacco control interventions to counter the negative health effects of smoking and second-hand smoke on children, families, residents, and the community. |
| Healthy and Active Living Project | |
Studies show that low-income communities typically have a limited number of resources that promote access to a healthy lifestyle. Also, low-income areas typically have a limited amount of safe recreational facilities or public parks where children can play. People’s CORE promotes health awareness in schools through nutrition education and promoting active lifestyles among youth. |
